Indonesia seeks stronger potash trade with Belarus

Indonesia seeks stronger potash trade with Belarus

London, 12 June (Argus) — Indonesia is looking to improve trade flows of potash with Belarus after a meeting last week between Indonesian foreign minister Sugiono and the Belarusian ambassador to Jakarta. Sugiono intends to enhance "co-operation in potash" with Belarus to support the Indonesian government's goal of "achieving national food security", the foreign ministry said in an official statement. Belarus is one of the world's largest exporters of potash fertilizer. State-owned producer Belaruskali exported more than 10mn t of potash last year. Indonesia is the largest importer of potash in southeast Asia and applies most of the fertilizer to the country's large palm oil plantations. Indonesia sourced almost a fifth of its total MOP imports from Belarus last year. Indonesia imported 245,000t of MOP from Belarus last year, in addition to roughly 406,000t of MOP from Uzbekistan, the majority of which is likely to be from Belarus, GTT data show. In the first four months of this year, MOP imports from Belarus and Uzbekistan totalled about 331,000t. Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto has outlined food security as a core objective of his government. Since coming to power in October, his administration has introduced plans to increase agricultural output by converting some of the country's swamplands into rice fields. Canpotex potash sales fully committed through Q3

Houston, 10 June (Argus) — Canadian potash distributor Canpotex is fully committed on its potash sales volumes through the end of September. The marketer said this is a result of "continued strong demand for potash", citing firm fundamentals for agricultural commodities and sustained focus on food security in various key markets. Canpotex is the joint marketing arm of North American fertilizer producers Nutrien and Mosaic, and exports potash to non-North American markets, primarily through the western Canadian port of Vancouver. Nutrien weighing options to increase potash exports

Houston, 3 June (Argus) — Canadian fertilizer producer Nutrien is considering options to increase its west coast potash port capacity in anticipation of rising global demand. Increasing potash export capacity on the west coast of North America is part of Nutrien's long-term strategy to strengthen supply chain resilience, the producer said. It is unclear, however, if Nutrien would focus on building extra capacity in the US or Canada. Currently Canpotex — Nutrien and US fertilizer producer Mosaic's joint potash marketing arm — exports roughly 13mn metric tonnes (t) annually. Nutrien has not shied away from sharing its strong potash demand outlook , noting in its first quarter earnings report that it expects global potash shipments in 2025 to range from 71mn-75mn t. Global potash shipments in 2024 reached 72.5mn t, exceeding their forecast from 68mn-71mn t. The MOP Nola price for the week ended 30 May was $327.50/st fob, up by 28pc from the start of January. Polish fertilizer output falls to 10-month low in April

London, 27 May (Argus) — Polish fertilizer production fell to its lowest monthly level in 10 months in April on the back of low nitrogen production, figures released by statistics office GUS show. Nitrogen, phosphate and potash output on a nutrient basis reached a combined 181,500t in April, a decline by 4pc on the year and by 19pc on the month, according to GUS data. Despite the weak April, overall year-to-date nutrient volumes remained 8pc up on the year at 809,000t. In April the decline in output was mainly caused by a slump in nitrogen production, which fell by 12pc on the year and by 19pc on the month to 136,600t. Two nitrogen plants, Anwil's Wloclawek and Grupa Azoty's Tarnow plant, reported outages in April, with the Anwil outage continuing until 20 May. Anwil's parent company Orlen said last week its expansion of Anwil's nitrogen production capacity by 40pc — about 495,000t/yr — to a total of nearly 1.5mn t/yr has not yet been commissioned, with the start of full capacity currently expected in summer this year. Grupa Azoty, Poland's largest fertilizer manufacturer, continues to have parts of its operations affected by shutdowns, according to its Remit notices issued within the EU's market transparency regulations. The company's NPK-specialist plant in Police in northwest Poland is undergoing a "balancing shutdown", reducing its capacity by about one third from 10 May until the end of this month. Azoty's plant in Tarnow, which has been operating at a reduced rate for several months, will fully shut its production for planned maintenance in the first three weeks of June. And Azoty's plant I Kedzierzyn is planning a maintenance shutdown between 24 August and 18 September. US Senate seeks coordinated cargo theft probes

Washington, 14 April (Argus) — US rail and other transportation industries are urging Congress to move forward on a bill that would create a division within the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate investigations of organized cargo theft. The bipartisan Combating Organized Retail Crime Act of 2025 was introduced on 10 April by Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada). The bill, similar to a 2023 effort, calls for creation of an organized retail and supply chain crime coordination center to unite experts from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as retail industry representatives. The Class I railroads also operate their own police forces with powers equivalent to public law enforcement. Coordinating investigations in a timely manner is difficult because of the proliferation of different agencies. Railroad police officials are limited to carriers' facilities, while local police forces are unable to quickly investigate railroad thefts because they need specific permission to enter railroad property. "Organized criminal operations continue to evolve and escalate their targeted attacks against our nation's supply chain and retailers," Association of American Railroads chief executive Ian Jefferies said. The nation's largest railroads experienced a 40pc spike in cargo theft last year, costing carriers more than $100mn, AAR said. Rail thefts tend to be split between flash mob robberies and organized efforts by criminal networks, according to Danny Ramon, director of intelligence and response at logistics platform Overhaul. Flash mobs often target containers in urban areas, seeking valuable products such as apparel and footwear that they can quickly sell. These thefts often occur in regions near ports where containers are loaded onto trains, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta. But thefts in rural areas are becoming more prolific, Ramon said. They have become popular locations because it can take law enforcement an hour or longer to reach trains as opposed to minutes for urban rail cargo thefts. Rural areas also make it easier for groups to stage larger thefts. The organized groups tend to track trains from origin and monitor them along the way, breaking in during breaks in rural areas. They come prepared with equipment and cargo vans to enable them to quickly empty products from trains. Arizona has become a popular location for thefts because of its vast portions of rural area. In addition, many trains are heading east with containers of goods recently loaded from west coast ports. Thefts by criminal organizations have increased in part because of the ease in selling to individuals. The proliferation of on line websites have allowed these organizations to bypass traditional third-party middlemen and sell directly to consumers, Ramon said.
