This is driving smelters to diversify their tantalite supply chains away from high-risk areas, pulling a wider array of origins into the global tantalite benchmark assessed by Argus.
The DRC has historically been a major producer of tantalite, but production in the east of the country has been threatened by the M23 rebel group and its allies in the Congo River Alliance. The DRC produced 34,468t of tantalite and mixed 3T minerals (tantalum, tungsten and tin) in 2018-23, largely in the mineral-rich provinces of North and South Kivu, which border Rwanda. Output from Rwanda, the next biggest producer in the region, stood at 24,112t of tantalite and mixed 3T minerals during the same period, data from due diligence organisation the International Tin Supply Chain Initiative (ITSCI) show.
